Ninety-six percent of Brazil’s current cocoa production area meets requirements for export to the European Union, according to Jaime Recena, executive president of the Brazilian Cocoa Industry Association (ABICAB). The indicator reinforces the international competitiveness of national production.
Recena highlighted that Brazil’s cocoa sector possesses significant potential in the European market. The executive pointed to the country’s sustainable production practices and traceability systems as key competitive advantages.
The European market has increasingly stringent requirements for agricultural products, particularly regarding environmental sustainability and product origin documentation. Brazil’s cocoa production aligns with these standards, according to the ABICAB president.
The 96% eligibility rate encompasses the majority of the country’s cocoa-producing regions, suggesting broad capacity for expansion into European markets. The figure indicates that production challenges or market access limitations are not widespread across Brazilian cocoa areas.
ABICAB’s assessment comes as global cocoa markets face supply pressures and quality concerns. European importers have placed greater emphasis on certified sustainable cocoa in recent years, creating opportunities for producers who meet these criteria.
Brazil’s historical position as a major cocoa producer, combined with its documented sustainability efforts and traceability infrastructure, positions the country favorably against competing suppliers. The combination of these factors addresses European buyer preferences for transparency in agricultural supply chains.
The sector continues to evaluate opportunities for expanding exports to the European Union, with ABICAB monitoring regulatory developments and market access conditions.
